Explicit Teaching Instructional Model
At WPS our teaching is guided by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0, with a strong focus on explicit teaching to support every student's success.
What it means
Clear, structured, consistent teaching — every classroom, every day.
Our teachers clearly explain and demonstrate new learning, breaking skills down into manageable steps so students understand exactly what to do. Lessons are carefully structured, with teachers modelling thinking and processes before guiding students as they practise, then gradually supporting them to work more independently.
This approach ensures that all students are engaged and learning at a level that meets their individual needs. As their confidence grows, students are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, build independence, and develop strong thinking skills.
By using a consistent approach across the school, our classrooms provide a familiar and supportive learning environment where students know what to expect and can focus on achieving their best.
The Pedagogical Model
WPS uses a Gradual Release of Responsibility model — moving from teacher-led to student-led learning.
The teacher models thinking aloud, demonstrating the skill or concept step by step.
Teacher and students work together through examples — guided practice with immediate feedback.
Students apply the skill independently, building confidence and ownership of their learning.
