Our School

Transition to WPS

Starting school is a major life transition for both children and their families. Our program is designed to make the journey as warm, supported and positive as possible.

Our Philosophy

Transition is a process, not an event.

Starting school is both challenging and exciting — a time of change in which children, families and educators adjust to new roles, identities, expectations, interactions and relationships.

At WPS we believe transitions rely on children, families and early childhood professionals developing positive, supportive relationships. Within these relationships, children should feel that school is a worthwhile place to be, where people care about them and where they are likely to succeed.

Families should feel valued, respected and included in school life. Our transition program has been designed to support the creation of these successful relationships — and it extends beyond Prep. At the end of each school year all students participate in a transition program that leads towards meeting their classroom teacher for the following year.

01

Connect with Kinder

WPS staff visit local kindergartens so children see a familiar face before they arrive.

02

Orientation Sessions

Prospective Prep students visit the school for sessions in Term 4, experiencing the classroom and meeting their teacher.

03

Meet Your Buddy

Preps meet their Grade 6 Buddy as part of the formal transition program so they know a friendly face on their first day.

04

First Day & Beyond

The transition process continues throughout the year — it is never a one-off event. Support is ongoing as children settle into routines.

The Buddy Program

Our Preps students meet their Grade 6 Buddy as part of the formal transition program — so over the summer holiday period they know that on their first day they will see a familiar and friendly face.

The Buddy program is an authentic and very important part of our school. The Grade 6s meet with their buddy every week throughout the year to read, play, learn and encourage positive play. The leadership and mentorship that our school leaders display is paramount to the caring and nurturing culture we promote at WPS.

What buddies do together

  • Read together weekly
  • Play and explore the yard
  • Learn and investigate
  • Encourage positive play
  • Build mentorship and leadership
